The EZ bar, your arms' best friend
You'll spot an EZ bar straight away. The steel bends in waves. Those curves let your wrists rotate inward. Stress on the joints drops immediately. Its other name, curl bar - biceps bar, says it all. It exists first and foremost to perform elbow flexion. Beginner or advanced, everyone gets something out of it.
Standing EZ bar curl: the technique step by step
Stand upright, feet under your hips. Grab the bar on its angled sections. Your palms face the ceiling. Arms hang down and the weight brushes your thighs.
Bend your elbows and drive the bar upward. Your elbows must stay pinned against your ribs. Squeeze the biceps for a second at the top: that's the contraction. Then lower under control over three counts. Your body doesn't move an inch.
The most common mistakes
Swinging your torso to launch the movement.- Breaking your wrists at the top.
Letting your elbows drift behind your body.
Going too heavy and losing your position.
Close grip or wide grip?
How far apart your hands sit changes what you feel. A close grip hits the outer head harder, the one that builds the peak. A wide grip pulls more on the inner head. Alternate between the two from session to session. Your arms will thicken along their whole length. A straight bar, by contrast, forces strict supination and sometimes real pain.
Supination or pronation
In supination, your palms come up to face you. That's the classic version of the exercise. In pronation, they point toward the floor. The muscle works less, the forearms a lot more. The two grips pair very well within the same week.
The preacher curl to isolate the biceps
The Larry Scott preacher bench kills any cheating. Your arms rest on the angled pad. The shoulder is locked, only the elbow works. When holding the bar, keep a slight bend at the bottom. Never lock your elbows out fully. That detail protects the tendon. The same bar also works for the skull crusher, a triceps classic.
Two variations worth trying
The reverse EZ bar curl
Here, your palms face the floor. This pronated grip recruits the brachialis and the forearms. The weight drops right away: that's normal. Putting this curl at the end of your session works very well.

Attach the bar to a low pulley. Tension becomes constant, from start to finish. Many lifters find the biceps curl more comfortable this way. It's one of the best options for finishing with a pump.
How much weight for big arms?

Curl barre ezBras · barre
A heavy EZ bar curl belongs in the 6 to 8 rep range. But the bar has to follow the same path every time, no jerking, no momentum. Otherwise your back absorbs what your arms can no longer carry.
So aim for 8 to 12 clean reps. The last one should be hard, never sloppy. Three to four sets is plenty. By holding that standard, the weight climbs on its own over the weeks. Big, defined arms come from technique, not ego. A personal trainer can fix your position in a single session.
