The ski erg, the ergometer that copies cross-country skiing

Ski de fondCardio
The ski erg is a standing cardio machine. It reproduces the Nordic skiing stroke, on your feet, without snow. You grab two handles attached to a chain, then pull down. The torso closes, the legs go with it, the arms finish the stroke. This erg came out of the cross-country skiing world before spreading to gyms and clubs.
A stroke that's easy to describe
The movement comes down to three beats: high catch, drive, controlled return. It really does feel like skiing. A monitor shows power in watts, stroke rate and distance. So every skierg exercise becomes measurable.
The specs to know before buying
The system runs on air resistance - which is what makes cross-country skiing feel so close. The harder you pull, the more the flywheel brakes. A damper lever adjusts the airflow and changes the feel, from a short sprint to a long steady effort.
- Ergonomic handles: solid grip, free wrist, less strain in the forearms.
- Mounting: on the wall to save space, or on a freestanding base with wheels, sold separately.
- Monitor: it shows watts, calories, time and distance live.
- Build: durable frame, made for clubs and heavy use.
Why put the skierg in your training
Three qualities improve together: power, cardio and endurance. The skierg is also very easy on the joints, since there's no impact. Hyrox athletes use it right from the first station.
Every level gets something out of it: beginners work the technique, competitors chase maximum power.
Three benchmark sessions
Beginner: 6 × 1 min, 1 min recovery, holding a steady rhythm.- Intermediate: 4 × 500 m at a strong pace.
Advanced: 8 × 250 m, starting every 90 seconds.
Price, used market and availability
The Concept 2 SkiErg is still the reference, at around €1,000. Rogue sells compatible stands and racks; Decathlon has no direct equivalent. “Not Available For Sale” turns up on product pages now and then: the model is out of stock, or reserved for another market. The used market is a real alternative then, as long as you check the chain, the flywheel and the condition of the handles.
Common questions about the ski erg
Do you need to know how to ski?
No. The stroke is learned in one session, even with no skiing background.
How long should a session last?
Fifteen to twenty minutes is enough for a real cardio effect and a solid volume of work.
Where do you put it at home?
On the wall, if space is tight. Otherwise the wheeled base makes the machine freestanding and easy to store.
